Lab Meeting, Autumn 2015, Week 7

Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

What we did over last week

Florian

  1. Corrected proofs for Kuperberg & Jaeger for LCN.

  2. Corrected proofs for Norcliffe, Harris, & Jaeger for LCN.

  3. Corrected proofs for Harris, Jaeger, & Norcliffe (special issue) for LCN.

  4. Submitted my promotion file. It was reviewed internally last week and is now sent out for external evaluation.

  5. Wrote blog post about special issue release. Just waiting for TOC to be added.

  6. Edited Pajak et al and had some back and forth with the new editor of Language Learning, who suddenly wanted the manuscript cut by 50% (then 40%, then 30%), although the paper had already been accepted by the previous editor. I guess one lecture from this is to never wait so long that a new editor takes over. Sigh.

  7. Edited Hume et al.

  8. Edited tutorial for BCS 152. Edited through the first three main pages and wrote a lot of new sections.

  9. Letters (one new and a few slightly edited versions).
  10. Outline grant proposal for CUHK-Rochester collaboration.

Kodi

  1. Substantially revised manuscript on language processing as Bayesian inference based on socio-indexical knowledge

  2. Developed written stimuli for experiment on supervised vs. unsupervised distributional learning of vowel variation (w/ Dave).

  3. Recorded said stimuli and began preparing the sound files for resynthesis

  4. Worked on stimuli for Bradlow & Bent (2008) replication + extension

  5. Started learning git to streamline my workflow (thanks Dave!)

Andrew

  1. Started complete rewrite of HTML/JS/CSS for Becky's experiment, because the existing version is built on some shaky ancient HTML.
  2. Filed amendments on both RSRB protocols to remove people who are gone and no longer associated with the lab and to change Masha to a non-UR affiliated researcher.
  3. Migrated MariaDB and PostgreSQL databases from old www to new www and shut old www down for good.

Olga

  1. Met with Florian about the tutorial. looked over the changes and comments he made on it
  2. Updated some of the things we talked about. Still so much more to do
  3. Answered independent students questions about IRB and subject recruitment
  4. Thought about the audit. Figuring out a timeline to write it up.

Esteban

  1. Conducted some analyses of distributional changes in how speakers manipulate VOT

  2. Continued revision for a paper to JML.

  3. Bug tested and continued to pilot VOT comprehension paradigm.
  4. Submitted edited source materials to the publisher of LCN.

Dave

  1. Analyzed phonetic adaptation fMRI data: preprocessing and fitting GLMs to extract trial/vot activations.

  2. Recorded /I/-/E/-/ae/ minimal triplets with Kodi with an eye towards morphing continua from them for a vowel distributional learning experiment

  3. Finalized selective adaptation paper for PBR (pub med deposit, final proofs). Now out in [[http://www.springer.com/-/0/AVBEaZ7JAgfPWjhrnjKP|online first]!

  4. Last set of major revisions to job application materials.

Sarah

  1. Continued editing SET manuscript for Lab Phon special issue after meeting with Mike and Christine.

  2. Met with several BCS 111 students about their first exam.

Dan

Amanda

  1. Prepped and gave talk in KurTan lab meeting about my research interests and ideas

  2. Worked on revisions for my mammals paper, ran more complete models, requested a revision extension
  3. Looked at data from a sanity check version of my kid study, watched some of the videos of the kids doing the task

Zach

  1. Sent out rec letter requests.
  2. Killing myself on Robbie's project
  3. Talked to Katya about her work and working with Vera
  4. Created a lot of stimuli because my RAs are slow af
  5. Worked on committee presentation

  7. Graded more exams

Linda

  1. Worked on NSF personal statement.
  2. Spent a lot of time mulling over (and eventually implementing) Robbie's computational homework.
  3. Worked on presentation for Robbie's class for Tuesday (on Elman's 1991 article)
  4. Created lists for Bradlow and Bent replication project.

Maryam

  1. Working on Robbie's homework
  2. Finalizing experiment script
