Lab Meeting, Summer 2015, Week 14

Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

What we did over last week

Florian

  1. Edited through first complete draft of Butler et al on animacy effects in Spanish and Yucatec. Still a good deal of work to do, but we're making progress.

  2. Edited my handbook chapter with Esteban. Incorporated further feedback. Also heard back from Esteban with some ideas.

  3. Provided a bit more feedback on Guillermo's paper, but only minor points. I think we might be submitting soon.
  4. Reviewed one paper for Cognition together with Kodi and Esteban.

  5. Declined one review for Phonetica.

  6. Started preparing my promotion file. Sigh.
  7. Met with Jessamyn Schertz to brainstorm about possible NRSA post-doc proposal.
  8. Agreed to be Darcy's external thesis advisor. And she'll visit the lab next year from March to May, it seems.

Kodi

  1. `Developed stimulus lists (together with Florian, Linda, Zach, and Maryam) for the international adaptation/assimilation collaboration with Cathi Best et al.

  2. `Wrote an HLP blog post announcing/advertising the review paper on speech perception and generalization across talkers and accents.

  3. `Worked on revisions to the speech perception review paper (mostly revising some of the confusing figures).

  4. `Explored the accented speech materials that are freely available in the OSCAAR database (e.g., various sets of recordings by Bradlow et al.). The goal of the exploration was to identify potential sets of materials that can be used for web-based studies of adaptation to foreign-accented speech.

  5. `Corresponded with Ann Bradlow and Tessa Bent about some of their recent projects.

  6. Reanalyzed''' data from project on socially-mediated syntactic alignment in order to motivate follow up experiments, and corresponded with Florian and Kathryn Campbell-Kibler about follow up ideas.

  7. Worked on `converting one set of my thesis experiments into an article for Cognitive Science the responds to Maye et al. (2008).

Andrew

  1. A whole whack of website changes

  2. Started refamiliarizing myself with Django and planning the models and views for the BCS152 app, which apparently will be called CrowdExp

Olga

/!\ Edit conflict - other version:

  1. Brushed up on HTML and CSS coding so that I can work on editing the lists and fillers pages for the BCS152 tutorial page. Not 100% on all of the pages that I needed to edit (was quite sick during my skype-in / the sound quality wasn't the best)... was I just supposed to take the wiki content and make it look nice / make quiz questions?

  2. Figured out how to format my data so that I can look at and analyze the confidence rating data from the Mammals study for the Frontiers paper.

  3. Edited my draft of the Frontiers paper to include the correct set of studies that I currently want to discuss.

  4. Read the edits by Mike and Chigusa, to be worked on in the morning.

  5. Considered switching to the review paper + 3 questions form of quals; will give it more consideration after the paper.

  6. Requested to be kept in the loop about the Crisis Chat Quality Improvement project with Craig Harman.

Zach

Linda

  1. Finished S/SH continuum for 10 S words and 10 SH words. Will need to go back and create more, but this will be enough for Exp1.
  2. Dubbing over Molly Babel's videos with Amanda's voice. Literally thousands of individual videos in the end. Hundreds of unique timings. Thank you bash. Still going through and adjusting times to make it look maximally realistic.
  3. Wrote script to get pronunciations + sounds within words for Australian list
  4. Wrote up vocab words for BCS 152.
  5. Coding to get Causal Inference exp going. Various things to prep the stimuli for running. Somewhat idealistically aiming to have it run by the end of Sunday. We'll see
