= CODE V and Zemax for students = Here’s some info about optical design software for student use. Michele, unfortunately I think these offers are only available to students, but this may be helpful for you in the future if you have other students working on the project who need access to the software. - Ben Moon, Dec 2019 CODE V student license Click on ‘online form’ near the bottom of the page Fill out the form Make sure to use your UR email address Select ‘CODE V’ and ‘Light Tools’ in the products interested in field (they use the same license, so if you get a license key for one, it works for both) Someone will contact you and send the paperwork for completing the student license application (this application requires a validation email from a professor confirming that you’re a student, you won’t use the software for commercial purposes, and you need to use the software for classroom or thesis-related research) Once your application is completed, they’ll send a link to download the programs along with instructions for installation Student licenses have to be renewed each year ==== To use a license from UR's license server ==== If you do not have your own student license of CODE V, it is possible to check out a license from UR's license server to run CODE V. This requires that you are on the UR network or using VPN to connect to the UR network. Follow these instructions to install CODE V: 1. Download the installation files for CODE V 11.4 from here 2. Run the installer, using all defaults until you get to the license page 3. Select floating license and input this address: ecm-lic-wp2.ur.rochester.edu 4. Finish the installation (usually requires a reboot) 5. As long as you are connected to the UR network, you should be able to open CODE V and use it Zemax Academic-Program Click ‘students join now’ button near the bottom Fill out the form Search ‘University of Rochester’ to find the institution Make sure to use your @ur.rochester.edu email address (if your email address doesn’t have this ending, it won’t let you submit the form) For this form, you have to list a course for which you’ll need to use the software. I’m not sure what qualifies as a valid course on their end. It’s also somewhat unclear to me if the ‘educator name’ field is supposed to be the professor for the course listed, or your advisor… If your application is accepted, you’ll be emailed with information about downloading and installing the software. People can also use the virtual machin from UR which has Zemax and CODE V. There are limitations for saving the data. All data have to be saved on cloud. https://desktop.rochester.edu/portal/webclient/index.html#/ = APLab Zemax License, NOW EXPIRED = [authored by Jeff 06/05/2019] Zemax currently runs on our computing server Argus == To Connect and Launch Zemax == 1. Connect to Argus using MobaXterm (click link for how-to guide) 2. You should now see a terminal screen 3. type "zemax" into the terminal, you should be launched into a program called virtualbox 4. Launch Zemax Opticstudio by clicking on the icon on the taskbar Getting data off a virtual machine can be a little tricky, the easiest way is to save a file to Opus. === Things to Note === * Zemax runs on virtual hardware, this necessarily means that it will not run as efficiently as it would on a normal computer. However, I've granted it as many hardware resources as I can. It should still be more powerful than most workstations in the lab * Remote graphics connections are typically a little slow and clunky, this is unavoidable. However it does not mean that your program is lagging - just the graphical connection. == License Info == Hi Michele, Thank you for your purchase of OpticStudio!
