Windows 10 (all printers)

1. Download the appropriate Canon driver software here: http://www.cvs.rochester.edu/cvspriv/downloads/Canon/

2. The file will download to the "Downloads" folder within your user directory (located at "C:\Users\<your_username>\Downloads)" but typing "Downloads" in the search field at the bottom left corner of your desktop should show you a clickable link to it). Double-click the file to run it. The file will decompress and create a folder in your Downloads folder called:

"md_-win-gx7000-1_02-ea34_2" for the Maxify GX7021 printer

"md_-win-gx6000-1_01-ea34_2" for the Maxify GX6021 printer

It will also automatically start a printer setup program. When you see the welcome screen for the printer setup program, click on the "X" in the top right corner of the window to close it and click the resulting "Yes" box to verify that you wanted to do this.

3. In the search box in the bottom left corner of your desktop type in "Control Panel" and select the Control Panel app from the search results.

4. Select the "Devices and Printers" control panel. Select the "Add a Printer" option.

5. Select the option "Add a local printer" towards the top of the window. The control panel will automatically start searching for printers but we don't want that so click the link "The printer that I want isn't listed".

6. Select "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" from the list of options, then click "Next"

7. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "LPR Port". Click "Next".

8. On the "Add Printer" page, enter the address of the printer in both fields (see top of this wiki for printer addresses). Click "Next".

9. In the next window a list of printer drivers will appear. Click on the "Have Disk" button, then the "Browse" button in the next window

10. Navigate to your Downloads folder and go into the "md_-win-gxX000-1_0X-ea34_2" folder. Inside of it you'll find a folder called "Driver"...go into that folder. Highlight the file "GX6000P3" (for the GX6021) or "GX7000P6" (for the GX7021) and click the "Open" button. Then click the "OK" button.

11. You should now be shown either the "Canon GX6000 Series" or "Canon GX7000 Series" printer driver...click to highlight it, then click the "Next" button

12. For the Printer name, enter something descriptive. Click "Next".

13. The printer driver should now install (after you allow it to). In the next window (if it appears), click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".

14. In the next window (if it appears), try printing a test page. Click "Next". If the test page comes out, you're good to go!

Mac OSX (for GX-7021 "bcsmaincolor" printer ONLY)

7. On the "License Agreement" window click on the "Yes" button

8. On the "For using services related to Canon product" window click on the "Do Not Agree" button, then the "OK" button in the confirmation window

9. The installer will now spend about 20 seconds looking for the printer. It will then display the "Check the Connection Method" window asking if you want to allow the printer to be used with a wired LAN connection. Printer serial number should appear as GX7000 series (****01613). Click on the "Yes" button

10. On the "Add Printer" window click on the "Add Printer" button. This will open both MacOS' add printer window as well as display a Canon webpage in your browser. Ignore the webpage

11. In the MacOS "Add" window you should see a list of printers appear with one called "bcsmaincolor"...click on this printer. The fields at the bottom of the window should change to show the name of the printer as well as "Secure AirPrint" being used as the connection protocol. Once these appear click the "Add" button and the printer will be added to your computer

12. Back at the Canon "Add Printer" window, click the "Next" button. After a few seconds it will tell you that you can now print from your computer. Click the "Next" button

Note^2: These instructions were tested under MacOS Catalina...newer OSes may be different

2. Double-click the downloaded file...it will create a drive on your desktop called "CANON_IJ". Double-click on it and run the "Setup" app in the resulting window

3. Click the "Next" button in the opening window to begin the process

4. At the password prompt enter your Mac user account password

5. On the "Start Setup" window click on the "Start Setup" button

6. On the "Before You Continue" window click on the "Next" button. The program will the download some files over the network

7. On the "License Agreement" window click on the "Yes" button

8. On the "For using services related to Canon product" window click on the "Do Not Agree" button, then the "OK" button in the confirmation window

9. The installer will now spend about 20 seconds looking for the printer. It will then display the results of the search but will NOT find your printer. Click on the "No" button.

10. On the "Select Connection Method" window click on the "Wired LAN Connection" button, then click the "Next" button.

11. You'll be asked to check the power on the printer...click on the "Next" button to proceed. The software will now do another scan, looking for the printer, but will not find it.

12. On the "Select Printer" window, click on the "Printer Not Found" button.

13. On the "Connecting Printer to Network" window, click on the "Search For IP address" button. In the "Search by IPv4 address" field, enter the IP address of the printer. Then click the "Next" button.

14. With any luck the software will find the printer, spend a few seconds installing drivers, then will display the "Add Printer" window.

15. On the "Add Printer" window click on the "Add Printer" button. This will open both MacOS' "Printers" preference pane as well as display a Canon webpage in your browser. Ignore the webpage

16. In the MacOS printer "Add" window, click on the "IP" icon at the top of the window. In the "Address" field type in the IP address of the printer. For the protocol, select "AirPrint". The "Use" field at the bottom of the window should then automatically fill with "AirPrint". Once it does, click the "Add" button at the bottom of the window and the printer should then appear in your list of printers. You may want to give it a more useful name than its IP address though :)

At this point you're FINALLY done.

Linux (Mint/Ubuntu/Debian-based distributions...all Maxify printers)

As usual these instructions may or may not work for you depending on your Linux distribution. These instructions were created using Linux Mint 21.1

1. Open the "Printers" preferences app from the "start" menu

2. Click the "+ Add" button. In the resulting window click on the arrow next to the "Network Printer" heading

3. Click on "LPD/LPR Host or Printer", then on the right enter the address of the printer in the "Host" field (leave the "Queue" field blank). Click the "Forward" button.

4. You should now see the "Describe Printer" box. Enter a name for the printer in the first two fields...the third field need not be changed. Click the "Apply" button.

5. The printer should now be added and an option to print a test page should appear. If the test page prints, you're good to go!
