Meliora Hall Network Registration

So, what's the deal?

The University has decided that it's necessary for University IT to be able to identify and track users connected to the University's computer networks. They want to be able to know when a user is on the network, what computer they are using, and what they are doing on the Internet. For the college of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, this will be accomplished using "Network Registration", or NetReg for short.

NetReg will be enabled for BCS/CVS users in Meliora Hall at 8am on February 11th

What is NetReg?

When you connect a computer to the wired network here in Meliora, and you attempt to access a non-UR Internet resource (like an outside web site), you will be required to go to a webpage and log into the network using your Active Directory login. Your login info will be remembered by the network, so you will not need to do this every time you connect. If a computer is regularly connected to the network, you will only be required to re-login once a year.

What is my Active Directory login?

Along with the better known NetID, you also have a network based login called your "Active Directory" login (or AD login, for short). It works just like NetID, but is used for different things (like the UR Wireless networks). I'm sure many of you have never used your AD login, and it's possible that the your username/password for NetID is different than your AD login.

As such, I strongly urge you to visit this UnivIT website to ensure your NetID and AD passwords are in sync with each other:

https://myidentity.rochester.edu

Once you login with your NetID, you can view your accounts (to ensure you have both a NetID and an AD account, and that they both use the same username), as well as change the password on your accounts (which will ensure that both your NetID and AD accounts have the same password). If anything looks amiss, contact the University IT Help Desk at x5-2000...I cannot help you with these accounts.

What do I need to do on February 11th?

When you arrive in the morning, open a web browser and navigate to a non-UR, non-HTTPS website (such as http://www.cnn.com). The web browser will automatically redirect you to the Network Registration website. At the Network Registration website, enter your UR Active Directory username and password. Once you login successfully, you're done...you have full network access. If you experience any issues with network registration, please contact the University IT Help Desk at x5-2000.

What about shared lab computers?

For access to the Internet, you will need to log into shared lab computers as well as your own computers. Once you finish using a shared machine, you can visit this webpage to explicitly log out of the network on that computer:

https://netreg.net.rochester.edu:9443/html/logout.htm

Please note that logins are not necessary if you are only accessing network resources within the University...it's only when you access things outside the UR network that you need to login.

What about the BCS/CVS wifi network?

It is important to note that our departmental wireless networks will remain unaffected while NetReg is enabled on the wired network. However, once this project is completed, our regular wifi network (BCSCVS) will almost certainly be modified to better integrate into the new network configuration so users have more access to departmental resources. This will very likely entail the use of NetReg on that network as well.
