Configuring BCS/CVS printers
If you are attempting to add one of our Xerox ColorQube printers to your computer, please follow these instructions instead: ColorQubeHelp
Setting up a printer can be a little tricky, as we have a variety of different printers here, and some have unique setup procedures. Please read these instructions carefully.
Printer connectivity here is done using IP addresses, not proprietary printing systems like Apple’s Rendezvous/Bonjour or Microsoft printer sharing. Every printer has an IP address and name, like cvsprinter.cvs.rochester.edu. Printers are accessible from computers on-campus only.
There are a few bits of information you need to collect first:
- Is one of the printers a Xerox color printer?
- If you are running Windows, are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
- The name of the printer...it should be on a sticker on the front of the printer. If not, ask Chris.
Step 1: Xerox color printers
If you are running Windows, and you are trying to add a Xerox color laser printer to your computer, you need to make sure that LPD/LPR printing is enabled on your computer..it's disabled by default. The instructions for enabling it are here: EnableLpdPrinting
Step 2: Obtain the printer driver
If you are running Windows, the chances are that Windows does NOT have the necessary driver for your printer built-in. You can download printer drivers for most of our printers here:

Please note that there are separate drivers for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Download the correct driver for your copy of Windows.

3. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "Standard TCP/IP Port" for a black and white printer, or "LPR Port" for a Xerox color printer. Click "Next", then "Next" again in the resulting window.
4. On the "Add Port" page, enter the address of the printer in both fields. Click "Next".
5. Click "Finish" in the next window.
6. In the next window, select the manufacturer of your printer from the left column, then the model from the right column, and click "Next". If the printer model doesn't appear, but you have downloaded and "installed" the correct driver, then click on "Have Disk". Navigate to the directory where the driver was installed (if you are not placed there automatically), and select the file you find inside.
7. For the Printer name, enter something descriptive. Click "Next".
8. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".
9. In the next window, do not printer a test page. Click "Next".
10. In the next (and last) window, click on "Finish". The computer will do what it needs to do, and the printer will be ready to go once the computer is done.
