Configuring BCS/CVS printers

Printer connectivity here is done via IP address, not proprietary printing systems like Apple’s Rendezvous/Bonjour or Microsoft printer sharing. Every printer has an IP address and name, like cvsprinter.cvs.rochester.edu. Printers are accessible from computers on-campus only, you cannot print to our printers from home.

Obtain the printer name(s) you need from Chris Freemesser before proceeding.

Mac OSX

1. Select the 'Print & Fax' preference pane from the Apple menu at the top left corner of the desktop.

2. Click on the '+' button in the bottom left corner of the preference pane. Select the 'IP' icon in the resulting window.

3. Enter the address of the printer, which will be something like 'cvsprintername.cvs.rochester.edu' or 'bcsprintername.bcs.rochester.edu'. You should see "Valid and complete address" appear below it.

4. If OSX doesn't automatically detect what kind of printer it is, click on the 'Print Using' pull-down menu and select 'Select a driver to use'. Find your printer in the list, and select it. If your printer does not appear in the list, then you may need to go to Apple's support website and search for a printer driver package for the brand printer you have (for example, search for 'Xerox printer drivers'). Apple does not include these by default in 10.6 or 10.7, but if Chris configured the computer originally, the HP and Xerox driver packages should already be installed.

5. Click the "Add" button to add the printer. That's it!

Windows XP

1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Printers. Select the "Add Printer" option.

2. Select the option "Local printer attached to this computer", but UNcheck "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer". Click "Next".

3. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "Standard TCP/IP Port" for a black and white printer, or "LPD" for a color printer. Click "Next", then "Next" again in the resulting window.

4. On the "Add Port" page, enter the address of the printer in both fields. Click "Next".

5. Click "Finish" in the next window.

6. In the next window, select the manufacturer of your printer from the left column, then the model from the right column, and click "Next". If the printer model doesn't appear, then you need to download the correct driver for the printer. Check here for a driver: BCS-CVS software. If you don't see it, then you nee to go to the manufacturer's website and download the necessary printer driver.

7. For the Printer name, enter something descriptive. Click "Next".

8. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".

9. In the next window, do not printer a test page. Click "Next".

10. In the next (and last) window, click on "Finish". The computer will do what it needs to do, and the printer will be ready to go once the computer is done.
