Obtain the printer name(s) you need from Chris Freemesser before proceeding. There are a few bits of information you need to collect first:

* If you are running Windows, are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
* Is one of the printers a Xerox color printer?
* The name of the printer...it should be on a sticker on the front of the printer. If not, ask Chris.

=== Step 1: Obtain the printer driver ===

If you are running Windows, the chances are that Windows does NOT have the necessary driver for your printer built-in. You can download printer drivers for most of our printers here:

http://www.cvs.rochester.edu/cvspriv/downloads

Please note that there are separate drivers for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Download the correct driver for your copy of Windows.

Run the driver installer. Normally, the Windows "Add Printer" wizard will open automatically afterwards.

If you are on a Mac, and your computer was configured by me (Chris), then the necessary HP/Xerox drivers should already be installed. If they are not, go to Apple's support website (http://www.apple.com/support) and do a search for the brand name of the printer(s) you want to add (such as "Xerox printer drivers"). Download and install the correct driver package for your computer. There are also some Mac printer drivers located at the "cvspriv" download area mentioned above.

Apple does not include these by default in 10.6 or 10.7, but if Chris configured the computer originally, the HP and Xerox driver packages should already be installed. 4. Configuring BCS/CVS printers

Printer connectivity here is done via IP address, not proprietary printing systems like Apple’s Rendezvous/Bonjour or Microsoft printer sharing. Every printer has an IP address and name, like cvsprinter.cvs.rochester.edu. Printers are accessible from computers on-campus only.

There are a few bits of information you need to collect first:

* If you are running Windows, are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version? * Is one of the printers a Xerox color printer? * The name of the printer...it should be on a sticker on the front of the printer. If not, ask Chris.

Step 1: Obtain the printer driver

Download and install the correct driver package for your computer. There are also some Mac printer drivers located at the "cvspriv" download area mentioned above.

Step 2: Xerox color printers

If you are running Windows, and you are trying to add a Xerox color laser printer to your computer, you need to make sure that LPD printing is enabled on your computer..it's disabled by default. The instructions for enabling it are here: EnableLpdPrinting

Step 3: Adding the printer

Assuming you have obtained the name(s) of the printer(s) you wish to add, here's how you add them:

Mac OSX

1. Select the 'Print & Fax' preference pane from the Apple menu at the top left corner of the desktop.

2. Click on the '+' button in the bottom left corner of the preference pane. Select the 'IP' icon in the resulting window. Printing protocol should be "LPD".

3. Enter the name of the printer, which will be something like 'cvsprintername.cvs.rochester.edu' or 'bcsprintername.bcs.rochester.edu'. You should see "Valid and complete address" appear below it.

4. If OSX doesn't automatically detect what kind of printer it is, click on the 'Print Using' pull-down menu and select 'Select a driver to use'. Find your printer in the list, and select it.

5. Click the "Add" button to add the printer. That's it!

Windows XP

1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Printers. Select the "Add Printer" option.

2. Select the option "Local printer attached to this computer", but UNcheck "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer". Click "Next".

3. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "Standard TCP/IP Port" for a black and white printer, or "LPD" for a Xerox color printer. Click "Next", then "Next" again in the resulting window.

4. On the "Add Port" page, enter the address of the printer in both fields. Click "Next".

5. Click "Finish" in the next window.

6. In the next window, select the manufacturer of your printer from the left column, then the model from the right column, and click "Next". If the printer model doesn't appear, but you have downloaded and "installed" the correct driver, then click on "Have Disk". Navigate to the directory where the driver was installed, and select the file you find inside.

7. For the Printer name, enter something descriptive. Click "Next".

8. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".

9. In the next window, do not printer a test page. Click "Next".

10. In the next (and last) window, click on "Finish". The computer will do what it needs to do, and the printer will be ready to go once the computer is done.

Windows 7

1. Click on Start -> Devices and Printers. Select the "Add a Printer" option.

2. Select the option "Add a local printer".

3. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "Standard TCP/IP Port" for a black and white printer, or "LPD" for a color printer. Click "Next".

4. On the "Add Printer" page, enter the address of the printer in both fields. Click "Next".

5. In the next window, select the manufacturer of your printer from the left column, then the model from the right column, and click "Next". 6. For the Printer name, enter something descriptive. Click "Next".

7. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".

8. In the next window, do not printer a test page. Click "Next".
