BCS/CVS resources and remote access
There are three types of VPN (Virtual Private Network) accounts that members of BCS/CVS have access to:
UR (River Campus) VPN - provides remote access capabilities to resources located on River Campus. Requires UR Duo two-factor authentication using NetID. Details can be found here: https://tech.rochester.edu/remote-access-vpn-tutorials/
"BCS-modified" UR VPN - a UR VPN account that's been modified to allow the user access to resources located behind the BCS departmental firewall. Requires UR Duo two-factor authentication using NetID. Details can be found here: https://tech.rochester.edu/remote-access-vpn-tutorials/. Once you have this operational, contact Chris Freemesser to have your account "BCS-modified".
URMC VPN - provides remote access capabilities to resources located within the Medical Center as well as some resources located on River Campus
Note: People are reporting problems receiving Duo phone calls and text messages so I suggest using the more reliable passcode option instead. When setting up your Duo account, add a device and specify that it's a TABLET. This will let you add the passcode option to your smartphone.
Accessing Meliora Hall resources remotely
The departmental resources that do not require a VPN connection to access are:
the various BCS & CVS websites
- the BCS/CVS wiki server (obviously!)
- the BCS/CVS calendar server
The departmental resources that require a standard UR VPN connection to access are:
- the departmental printers
- the "Opus" storage device
The departmental resources that require a "BCS-modified" UR VPN connection to access are:
- any lab/office computers connected to the wired network
- the BCS/CVS Retrospect backup servers
NOTE: accessing a lab/office computer via VPN also requires some kind of remote access software (like VNC) be installed on both the office/lab computer and the computer being used to connect to it
NOTE: it *is* possible to back up one of our computers over VPN using Retrospect but due to speed/bandwidth issues I will *not* set this up for anybody unless it's an emergency
Accessing CVS Medical Center resources remotely
The departmental resources that require a URMC VPN connection to access are:
- the CVS printers located in the Medical Center
- the CVSNAS3 and CVSNAS1a storage devices
- any lab/office computers connected to the URMC wired network
NOTE: accessing a lab/office computer via VPN also requires some kind of remote access software (like VNC) be installed on both the office/lab computer and the computer being used to connect to it
NOTE: connecting to the URMC network via VPN will also give you access to the BCS/CVS printers in Meliora Hall as well as the Opus storage device
