If you've been curious about Linux and have an old Windows 7 PC you don't need (or is too old to run Windows 10), replacing Windows with Linux is certainly an option. The Linux distribution I would install is Linux Mint 19 (Cinnamon desktop). It only takes an hour or two to perform a basic Linux install. In this instance I would make replacement of the boot drive with a solid-state drive an option, especially if you only want to play around with Linux. | If you've been curious about Linux and have an old Windows 7 PC you don't need (or is too old to run Windows 10), replacing Windows with Linux is certainly an option. Windows 7 to 10 upgrade
Option 1: Upgrade existing PC
The process for upgrading a BCS/CVS PC currently running Windows 7 to Window 10 will involve:
1) Making a full bootable backup of the existing Windows 7 boot drive as a precaution
2) Replacing any existing "mechanical" boot drive with a new solid-state hard drive (SSD). This will provide a drastic performance increase at a very minimal cost to you (under $100).
3) Installing Windows 10 Enterprise edition on top of the existing Windows 7 install. Testing has shown that this works pretty well and drastically reduces system downtime compared to doing a "clean" install.
I expect this type of upgrade will take a day to complete.
Option 2: Replace existing PC
Any computer deemed too old to run Windows 10 should be replaced when funds are available. Any new Windows 10 PC will come with Windows 10 pre-installed and I have software that can help migrate data/programs from the old Windows 7 computer to the new Windows 10 computer. An upgrade of this nature will probably take more than a day, as some applications may not migrate correctly and will need to be reinstalled manually.
Option 3: Clean Windows 10 install
If a PC currently has Windows 7 installed but any software/data on that PC is considered expendable, the computer can be wiped clean, the mechanical boot drive replaced with a new solid-state hard drive, and a fresh copy of Windows 10 & the standard BCS/CVS applications can be installed. Time to complete this type of upgrade is highly variable...anywhere between a few hours and two days.
Option 4: Replace Windows 7 with Linux
