1. Best programs to use

• For deleting portions of sound files: [http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Audacity]

  • For the most efficient work, use a mac. The mac version of audacity allows you to open multiple files for editing at once while the windows version will not.
• For converting audio file formats: Audacity

• For recording voices: [http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/ Praat] or Audacity

• For finding VOT and the time difference between words: [http://trans.sourceforge.net/en/presentation.php Transcriber] or Audacity

• For making transparency maps for Poser: Photoshop
• For animations: Poser
• For still photos: Photoshop
• For copying files to CS or slate:

  • SSH Secure File Transfer on Windows

• For converting between video formats: [http://handbrake.fr/ HandBrake]. Requires having [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ VLC] installed for some conversions. If you are comfortable at the command line, you can use [http://ffmpeg.org/ ffmeg] on Slate or Platypus.

• For extracting video from a DVD: [http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html MPEG Streamclip]. The program is free, but you have to buy the [http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/ MPEG2 Quicktime plugin] from Apple to make it work. We have it on Platypus and Echidna. (This is probably also possible with ffmpeg, but MPEG Streamclip can work from the master VIDEO_TS.VOB instead of having to do each VTS_xy_z.VOB individually.) Please only use this program for non-infringing purposes.

2. Important things to remember

• Log out! Unless you have something running that needs you to stay logged in while it runs, please make sure to always log out when you leave. This problem is worsened on Windows Vista, where the default thing it does when you think you are logging out is to just lock the screen. Please make sure you actually log out. If you do have a long-running program that requires you to stay logged in, please leave a note on the computer so other people know.

• Always check file ownership and permissions. The default ownership and permissions on all files and directories (aka Folders) you create on Slate (or any computer in the lab running Mac OS X or Linux) is for you to be the owner and for a group that you are the only member of to be the owning group, with only the owner having write permissions. If you want other people to be able to have access, make sure your files have read (and possibly write) permissions for the group(s) you have in common with the other people who will need access.
