Configuring an Android device for the BCS/CVS mail system

  1. Download the "K-9 Mail" app from the Android Play store. It's free.
  2. Run K-9 Mail. Tap the Menu button, and select the 'Add account' option.
  3. Enter the account's e-mail address and password, then tap the 'Next' button.
  4. Select IMAP or POP for the mail account type. If unsure which is right for you, read this page: PopOrImap

  5. You now need to set up the settings for the incoming mail server. Enter the following info, then tap the 'Next' button to continue:

User Name: your full e-mail address

Password: enter your e-mail password

IMAP or POP server: either "mail.cvs.rochester.edu" or "mail.bcs.rochester.edu" (depending on which dept. you're in)

Security type: SSL (always)

Authentication type: CRAM_MD5

Port: 993 (for IMAP) or 995 (for POP)

  1. K-9 will now check the mail server settings, and should then display the settings window for the outgoing mail server. Enter the following info, then tap the 'Next' button to continue:

SMTP server: either "mail.cvs.rochester.edu" or "mail.bcs.rochester.edu" (depending on which dept. you're in)

Security type: SSL (always)

Port: 465

Checkmark the 'Require sign-in' box

Authentication type: CRAM_MD5

User Name: your full e-mail address

Password: enter your e-mail password

  1. K-9 should then verify the server settings, and present some other settings windows. The options are fairly self explanatory. If you use POP mail, please be aware that it's best to not delete mail using the Android device, as it may cause the messages to never download to your computer.
  2. Once K-9 shows you the main mail window, you're good to go. The program has a slew of settings that you can customize. To get to them, tap the 'Menu' button, then select 'More', then 'Settings'.
