Brother HL-L2370DW printer setup instructions

These instructions are for configuring a computer to use a Brother HL-L2370DW black & white printer.

The address of the printer in Meliora 163 is 'bcs419.bcs.rochester.edu'.

Step 1: Enabling LPR/LPD support (WINDOWS USERS ONLY)

If you are running Windows, you need to make sure that LPD/LPR printing is enabled on your computer..it's disabled by default. The instructions for enabling it are here: EnableLpdPrinting

Step 2: Download the driver software

Visit this site to download the correct printer driver installation program for your platform:

Step 3: Add the printer to your computer

Windows 10

1. Download and double-click on the Windows driver installer. If asked if you want to allow the installer to run, click 'Yes'. You'll then see a box asking where you want the driver to be decompressed to, which is usually your Downloads folder. Click the "Decompress" button.

2. The installer will decompress the installer to a folder called "gdi" in your "Downloads" folder.

3. Click on Start, then scroll down the the program list to "Windows System" and click on it to expand it. Select "Control Panel". Within the Control Panel window select "Devices and Printers" (if you don't see it click on the "Large Icons" link in the top right corner. Once the "Devices and Printers" control panel is open, select the "Add a Printer" option.

4. The computer will automatically try to scan for printers. Click on the "The printer that I want isn't listed" link at the bottom of the window.

5. Select the option "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings". Click "Next".

6. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "LPR Port". Click "Next".

7. In the resulting window, enter the address of the printer (listed at top of this wiki) in both fields. Click "Next".

8. In the next window click on "Have Disk". Navigate to the "/gdi" directory where the driver was decompressed to (likely your "Downloads" folder) and select the file "BROHL17A". Click "Open", then click "OK" in the next box.

9. Several printers will appear in a list...select "Brother HL-L2370DW Series" at the bottom of the list. Click "Next".

10. For the Printer name enter "BCS419". Click "Next".

11. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".

12. In the next window, print a test page if you like. Click "Next".

13. In the next (and last) window, click on "Finish". The computer will do what it needs to do, and the printer will be ready to go once the computer is done.

MacOS

This process is going to vary depending on which version of MacOS you have

1. Double-click on the downloaded installation package. A volume called "Brother_Printer_Drivers" will appear on your desktop and a window with the driver in it should open automatically. If it does not appear automatically, double-click on the volume to open the window, and then double-click on the "Brother_Printer_Drivers.pkg" file in that window.

2. The installer is a typical Mac installer...it'll ask you to click continue a few times, then ask for your OSX password, and then it'll install the driver on your computer. Now you need to add the printer.

3. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the desktop, then select 'System Preferences' or 'Settings'. Click on the 'Print & Fax' or 'Printers & Scanners' preference pane (which you see depends on which version of MacOS you have). Once open, click on the'+' button in the bottom left corner of the preference pane and select 'Add Printer or scanner'. Select the 'IP' or globe icon in the resulting window. Printing protocol should be set to 'LPD'.

4. Enter the address of the printer (listed at the top of this wiki).

5. OSX will not automatically detect what kind of printer this is. Click on the 'Use:' pull-down menu and select 'Select Software...'. In the resulting window, select "Brother HL-L2270DW series CUPS" from the list (yes, the model number is different than the printer itself...that's okay). Then click the 'OK' button.

6. Click the 'Add' button to add the printer. After a few seconds the OS should create the printer and you're done.
