Lab Meeting, Autumn 2015, Week 1

Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

What we did over last week

Florian

  1. Proofed for Ilker's paper on quantifier adaptation to come out in JML. They screwed up a lot of references, so it's going to be a bit of work, but I had a first pass through. It should come out soon.

  2. Proofed Tal Linzen's paper to come out in Cognitive Science.

  3. Edited paper with Gina Kuperberg on prediction. This took us an insane amount of time and energy. I think it'll still need a good deal of work, but we were under immense time pressure and I was already traveling when I got the first draft. We resubmitted to Language, Cognition, and Neuroscience last week.

  4. Edited one last time through Buz and Jaeger. Resubmitted to PBR last week and Esteban sent it out to Susanne Gahl for feedback.

  5. Edited abstract of Pajak et al after feedback from Bozena. Got feedback from editor, too, and we now should be on track to resubmit soon.

  6. Went through Dave's paper on selective adaptation, which was accepted to Psychonomic Bulletin and Review in the first round with minor revisions.

  7. Uploaded a few papers to academia.edu. Joe Toscano's paper with Cheyenne Munson Toscano, Dave, and me seems to get some nice traction with lots of people reading it. Esteban's newly submitted paper also has found a lot of interest.
  8. Feedback on Linda's slides for AMLaP (two rounds, third one coming promptly).

  9. Feedback on Zach's project on accent adaptation.

  10. Feedback (though barely) on Kodi's project on socially mediated syntactic alignment.

  11. Feedback on some new cool results by Masha on optional case-marking. She had previously found that speakers were more likely to produce case-marking if the word order of the miniature language didn't already convey the same information. When she tried to replicate this finding online (where participants click words rather than speak them), the effect went away. She noticed that in the web-based paradigm there was one click regardless of whether one used the case marker (click on "flugit-ka") or not (click on "flugit"). So when she changed that to having to click separately (three clicks, as a matter of fact: e.g., "flugit", "ka", "gi"), the effect re-emerged! This seems to be a really sweet example of an effort-based trade-off. She is currently running follow-up studies.

  12. Reviewed 1 paper for JML and 1 paper for Cognition. Got contacted by the authors of the latter (which was rejected) and Esteban and I are sending her papers. Seems like it was a productive review.

  13. Declined review for NWO Vici grant proposal and 2 journal papers.

  14. Received new draft of the LLC paper on adaptation from Maryam and Kodi, a first full draft of our write-up of the needs+participle structure in PA English from Scott Fraundorf, a draft of Job Schepens paper.
