Lab Meeting, Fall 2016, Week 08

Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

What we did over last week

Florian

Xin

  1. Applied for ASA travel award
  2. Submit abstract to GURT
  3. Tried out MTurk; goal: plan longitudinal study
  4. Continued writeup of BB08 intro

Andrew

  1. Added PEP 484 type annotations to all my utility functions in CrowdExp, because they're useful for catching errors in function calls and returns, and I'm becoming a convert to caring about type systems, plus I learned that IDEA supports checking them.

  2. Emailed Tal Linzen in reply to his Twitter query about running speech production studies on MTurk
  3. Emailed with Scott Fraundorf about running SPR MTurk studies (been working with him on this for a while)
  4. Attempted to work with the bizarre IRB complaints about our most recent amendment, which is just a boring change of personnel, but suddenly caused a freakout about non-UR collaborators

Jenn

Dan

Amanda

  1. Read about sociophonetics, thought about what it would mean to decide to align oneself with the labels given by a speaker.
  2. Thought a lot about my projects, worried a little, decided to try to work towards some self-imposed deadlines.
  3. Made a mock-up for a possible project with CK and SBS.
  4. Ran more kids, tried to chat with an RA about some coding we want her to do. Mike suggested that Wu and Keysar once had people rate whether they thought something was true or not, without having an explicit measure beyond gut feeling - does anyone else remember this?
  5. Started working on another scholarship.
  6. Bugged Judith.
  7. Forgot repeatedly about fall break...
  8. Started prepping for the first week of Kinder Lab / HLP Lab RA meetings. We meet every other Friday. This week, we're setting a schedule. On Week A we're going to do a tutorial, Week B the more senior students / independent study students will have to present on their research / a paper.

Zach

Linda

  1. Updated subtitle experiments to include the 2-word and 4-word coupled conditions. Ran 60 participants in each of 3 conditions for the 2-coupled experiments, and pre-processed the data.
  2. Prepped for Belief Updating tutorial for DSC 530. Check out the app Florian and I made: https://hlplab.shinyapps.io/IdealCategorizerOverGaussianCategories/

  3. Put together analysis report for TOH task for Mike.
  4. Finalized Assignment 3 for DSC 530 class. Some admin-y things for that class.
  5. Started refactoring Pen in Mouth writeup (again).
  6. Wrote up methods for Experiment 1 for BB08.
  7. Started grading essay questions from BCS 111 exam.
  8. Put together MTurk tutorial for DSC 530.

  2. Visualizing designs for a Monster vs. Robot study on Contextual Diversity
