If it does not appear automatically, double-click on the volume to open the window, and then double-click on the "Brother_Printer_Drivers.pkg" file in that window.

6. Click the 'Add' button to add the printer. After a few seconds the OS should create the printer and you're done.

Linux (Debian-based distributions like Ubuntu and Mint)

Adding a printer varies a lot between distributions. These instructions are based on Linux Mint 18.3

1. Go to your "Downloads" folder and double-click on the "Brother_L6400_Linux1.deb" file you downloaded. A package installer window should appear...install the package. Repeat this process for the "Brother_L6400_Linux2.deb" file. This second installer will actually create a printer but the settings are wrong.

2. Click on the "Start" menu in the bottom left corner, then select Administration -> Printers.

3. In the "Printers" window you'll see a printer labeled "HLL6400DW". Right-click on it and select "Properties".

4. Change the "Description" field to "CVS249A". Then in the "Device URI" field, click the "Change..." button to the right of it.

5. In the resulting window, click on the "Network Printer" option on the left to expand it, then select "LPD/LPR Host or Printer" from the list. Enter "cvs249a.cvs.rochester.edu" in the "Host:" field on the right, then click the "Probe" button. Once done probing, click the "Apply" button.

6. Back in the printer's properties folder, click the "Print Test Page" button. If a test page prints, you're good to go. Please note that a printer error notification may appear briefly when printing...the printer may be a little slow responding but will wake up and print.
