Brother HL-L8260CDW or HL-L8360CDW printer setup instructions
These instructions are for configuring a computer to use a Brother HL-L8260CDW or HL-L8360CDW color printer. Please note the address of the printer you wish to use:
HL-L8260CDW
The address of this printer in the CVS Histology lab is: cvs007a.urmc-sh.rochester.edu

Step 1: Enabling LPR/LPD support (WINDOWS USERS ONLY)
If you are running Windows, you need to make sure that LPD/LPR printing is enabled on your computer..it's disabled by default. The instructions for enabling it are here: EnableLpdPrinting
Step 2: Download the driver software
Visit this site to download the correct printer driver installation program for your platform:

Mac users: this installer is for OSX 10.11 and newer
Windows users: the package includes a driver for the all versions of Windows 7/10
Note: same driver is used for both the 8260 and 8360
Step 3: Add the printer to your computer
Windows 10
special note for CVS164color printer - Use the "Devices and Printers" control panel to first remove the old CVS164COLOR printer from your computer. Right-click on the printer's icon, then select "Remove Device" from the menu
1. Download the driver from the website listed above...your web browser should download it to the "Downloads" folder in your user directory. Go into this folder and double-click on the file to decompress the installer.
2. Decompressing the installer will create a folder called "gdi" in your Downloads folder.
3. Click on Start in the bottom left corner of your desktop, then scroll down the the program list to "Windows System" and click on it to expand it. Select "Control Panel". Within the Control Panel window select "Devices and Printers" (if you don't see it click on the "Large Icons" link in the top right corner). Once the "Devices and Printers" control panel is open, select the "Add a Printer" option.
4. The computer will automatically try to scan for printers. Click on the "The printer that I want isn't listed" link at the bottom of the window.
5. Select the option "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings". Click "Next".
6. Click on "Create a new port" and specify the type of port as "LPR Port". Click "Next".
CVS164color printer users Select the option to use an existing port, then select the "cvs164color.cvs.rochester.edu" port from the list
7. In the resulting window, enter the address of the printer (listed at top of this wiki) in both fields. Click "Next".
8. The printer driver selection window will now appear. Click on "Have Disk". In the resulting "Install from Disk" window, click on the "Browse" button. A file selector will now appear...go to the "gdi" directory in your "Downloads" folder and open it. Windows should automatically select the file "BROHL17a.inf" in the folder, so click the "Open" button to close the file selector and then click "OK" in the "Install From Disk" window to close it.
9. Several printers will now appear in the list...select either "Brother HL-L8260CDW Series" or "Brother HL-L8360CDW" depending on which printer you have. Click "Next".
10. For the Printer name enter the appropriate printer address from the list above. Click "Next".
11. In the next window, click on "Do not share this printer". Click "Next".
12. In the next window, print a test page if you like. Click "Next".
13. In the next (and last) window, click on "Finish". The computer will do what it needs to do, and the printer will be ready to go once the computer is done.
Mac OSX
1. Double-click on the downloaded installation package. A volume called "Brother_PrinterDrivers_ColorLaser2" will appear on your desktop and a window with the file "Brother_PrinterDrivers_ColorLaser2.pkg" in it should open automatically. If it does not appear automatically, double-click on the volume to open the window. Double-click on the "Brother_PrinterDrivers_ColorLaser2" file in that window.
2. The installer is a typical Mac installer...it'll ask you to click continue a few times, then ask for your OSX password, and then it'll install the driver on your computer. Once done, you now need to add the printer.
3. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the desktop, then select 'System Preferences' and open the Printers preference pane (its actual name depends on which version of MacOS you have).
4, Click on the'+' button in the bottom left corner of the preference pane and select 'Add Printer or scanner'.
5. In the resulting window, select the 'IP' icon in the resulting window. Enter the following information:
Address: address of the printer (listed at the top of this wiki)
Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Queue: <leave blank>
Name: <should automatically populate with name entered in "Address:" field>
Location: <this can be left blank>
Use: select the "Select Software.." option...a list of printers should appear. Select "Brother HL-L8260CDW series CUPS" from the list and click "OK".
6. Click the 'Add' button to add the printer. After a few seconds the OS should create the printer and you're done.
