Office 2019 Mac setup instructions
Microsoft will be ending support for Office 2016 for Mac in October of 2020. As such all users of Office 2016 for Mac (or earlier) need to upgrade their version of Office.
You have two upgrade options:
* If you are a user of Office365 you can either use the online version of the Office apps offered through the OWA interface, or you can download the O365 version of Microsoft Office for Mac through the OWA interface and install that locally on your computer. Note that with this downloaded "local" version of Office logging into your O365 account to use the software is required.
* If you do not use Office365 and/or you don't want to install a version of Office on your computer that requires you to log into a Microsoft account just to use it, then you can use these instructions to install the "traditional" Office 2019 for Mac software on your Mac. With this version of Office, logging into your O365 account to sync with it is optional.
System requirements
Office 2019 requires that you be running a supported version of MacOS to receive needed Office security updates. As of right now (August 2023), this means you need to be running MacOSX Big Sur, Monterey, or Ventura. If you are not running Big Sur or newer then your Mac is not receiving needed security updates and is at risk. Please contact me (Chris) so we can get you upgraded.
Step 1: Download the software
* There are two installers you need to put Office 2019 on your Mac...the Office 2019 Serializer (which is a license manager) and the Office 2019 installer itself. You install them in that order. Both are available from our department web server but you must be connected to a non-guest UR network or connected to the campus via VPN to download them.

Step 2: Install the Office 2019 Serializer
The Office 2019 Serializer simply provides the needed license management code so you can utilize UR's Microsoft site license.
* Double-click on the "Office_2019_Serializer.zip" file you downloaded. It should decompress to a folder called "Office_2019_Serializer". Open this folder.
* Inside the folder is a program called "Microsoft_Office_2019_VL_Serialier.pkg". Double-click on it. The installer will launch...it's a simple installer that requires no special instructions.
Step 3: Install Office 2019
* Double-click the "Office_2019_Mac.pkg" file you downloaded to launch the Office installer. Once you agree to the license terms a window will appear with a "Customize" button towards the bottom. If there are any apps you don't want to install (OneNote and OneDrive may very well not be needed), simply uncheck them, then proceed with the install.
* Once the install completes the Microsoft Auto-Update program will likely run and install any needed updates. Office will update itself automatically going forward.
