Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

• This new poster from Joe Toscano's lab is kind of interesting. They look at how N1 amplitude varies along a bunch of different dimensions (place, manner, voicing). Might be a useful future reference if anyone is thinking of running ERP studies?

• Pre-registration for studies ... we could start doing that for all our studies? I really like the idea. Let's discuss? -- TFJ

• Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science - New Society, similar thoughts to the above -- AP

  • PsyArXiv - New preprint server for psych work -- AP

• APA Dissertation Research Award - Just discovered this small scholarship, worth $1000-$2500 for research (does not permit indirect costs or conference travel) for students post-quals. The department is allowed to sponsor 3 per year, you need to sign up to be an APA member ($67 for grad students) to apply. -- AP

What we did over last week

Florian

1. Quals reading.

2. Reviewed for DGfS.

3. Discussed reviews we got for paper on statistical learning we submitted to JEP:LMC.

4. Accepted: Ting's paper on learning under non-stationary statistics, in Cognition.

5. Declined to review twice.

Kodi

Xin

1. Discussed follow-up analysis plans on the accent generalization experiments with Florian and went over it with Linda.
2. Got the status of accent adaptation experiments with Kodi and talked about plans for manuscript preparation.
3. Attended INTERSPEECH16.
4. Finished CITI training and set up ROSS account.
5. Finishing personal page on BCS site.

Andrew

1. Updated the ExperimentGuidelines wiki page to reflect that EPRP numbers were phased out years ago and we do CITI certification now and that you need at ROSS account to get added to the IRB protocols.

2. Hassled people about doing the things that need to be done for next RSRB amendment for each protocol.

3. Met with Florian about CrowdExp and came away with another pages of bug fixes and polish suggestions.

4. Worked like a fiend on CrowdExp

5. Tried to get Enunciate (from Helen Meng's lab) to work with the help of someone from CUHK via email. It really doesn't want to work on the Windows PC we want it on.

Amanda

1. Failed to heed my calender's notices about updating the wiki.
2. Read some papers about EEG and pragmatics (whether or not we can find evidence for pragmatic processing using the N400 component - problematically researchers have been using generics, which introduces a confound, because "underinformative" generics are still more likely to contain semantically related information than false generic statements).
3. Emailed Geertje to ask her about some eye-tracking vs. EEG stuff, but I maybe have the wrong email address for her?
4. Emailed Judith about her paper on rational "overinformativity", she said she'd be willing to share what she has with us, but warning, it's going to be a rough, rough draft, and possibly without a general discussion... also, it'll be long. So, sorry.

5. Organized the first meeting of ESP, scheduled it for the semester - the schedule is available on the gcal on my personal website

6. Played around with gists and r markdown, working on a small tutorial for my RAs on using python to crop and resize images in batches.

7. Discovered a scholarship I can apply for (on Wednesday afternoon) that is due on Thursday. As of 1 am Thursday morning, it's still all consuming. For those grad students below me on this page, this is the APA Dissertation Research Award; it's a small research grant, but when you can submit to something, you should - seriously, for the 24 hours-ish I'm putting into this, the payoff is worth it if I'm awarded one. The department is allowed to endorse up to 3 candidates per year (I'm currently the only one in the department). Don't let me be the last one.

Zach

1. Kept working on subtitle write-up drafts
2. Learning (slowly) more about Dave's Javascript code.

Linda

1. Analysis for Kamide eyetracking experiment.
2. Analysis for BB08.
3. Started putting together an academic website. Worked out github.io thing and how to use Jekyll for static sites. Yay, online presence!
4. Finished the last bit of coding of the TOH experiment. Made all the discs wider, etc. Got on the Mike's RSRB protocol to run it. Figuring out analysis code.
5. Worked out how to edit a still image into a video. Unfortunately not sustainable though, since it uses the 7 day trial for Adobe Premiere (which I gotta say, is pretty sweet as far a video editing software goes).
6. Worked on pen in mouth writeup.

7. Read up on some object prototypes/constructors in JS and started cleaning up MTurk code to be more human useable.

Wednesday

1. Reading/homework for NRT class
2. Reading for BCS 502 presentation
3. Prepared lab mtg presentation
4. Started working on poster for Dimensions of D workshop this weekend
5. Writing
6. First year party planning disaster

Shaorong

1. Finished IRB training, and requesting Ross account.
2. Met with Florian about general research plans, realized there's lots of re-thinking to do.
3. Preparing lab presentation next week.
