Lab Meeting, Summer 2015, Week 13

Awe- and Aw-inspiring readings (or just stuff you think deserves a mention)

What we did over last week

Florian

  1. Edited handbook chapter on signal reduction with Esteban. So far we have received and integrated feedback from Mirjam Ernestus, Meghan Sumner, Uriel Cohen Priva, Inbal Arnon, Alan Bell, Dan Jurafsky, and Matt Goldrick. As part of that I read/browsed quite a few papers on the relation between phonetic and phonological reduction --some of which are eerily related to the review I mention below. I also spent another few hours updated refs. beautiful.

  2. Edited version 56 of grant proposal with Scott Fraundorf. Submitted on Wednesday!!!

  3. Edited 3rd and 4th draft of Klinton's paper with Mike and me on uncertainty maintenance. We're working on the editioral letter.

  4. Edited 4th draft of Guillermo's paper and letter to the editor.

  5. Edited Pajak et al (finally!!!). Got most of the way through writing a new section on L1 processing from scratch (11p so far) and edited down and revised the introduction.

  6. Reviewed a paper on pronunciation variation for Cognition. Met with Esteban and Kodi and had fun thinking through the pros and cons of the paper. Wrote the review and sent it to Este-Kode for feedback.

  7. Declined one review for Frontiers.

  8. Got questions from a journalist for Science about new paper out of Ted's lab and replied. This made me realize all the things Kyle didn't do!

  9. Was invited to participate in a commentary on Bayesian pragmatic. To be precise, Juergen Bohnemeyer was invited and then invited me. Apparently, there's a paper by Gerhard Jaeger and Michael Francke that talks about the use of Bayes Theorem in pragmatics. Perhaps others in the lab are interested? I'd imagine that Juergen might be open for a larger collab.

Kodi

  1. Began converting thesis experiments into journal manuscripts.

  2. Developed proposal for extending project on socially-mediated syntactic alignment (w/ Florian and Kathryn Campbell-Kibler), and began reanalyzing existing data to motivate new experiments.

  3. Helped Florian review a paper on pronunciation variation for Cognition... and learned a lot from discussing the paper with Florian and Esteban.

  4. Wrote project proposal for the BCS undergraduate replication-based research class. Project is to replicate Clarke and Garrett (2004).

  5. Sent Andrew figures and captions for the new lab website.
  6. Was invited to participate in a workshop on "Intergroup communication and linguistic accommodation", which is being proposed as a workshop for the 2016 Sociolinguistics Symposium (in Murcia, Spain!).

Andrew

Olga

  1. Working away on the tutorial. Fixed the sub navigation buttons for the two tracks. Added some new pages. Need to fix pop up.

  2. Updated calendar for Mindaugas Mozuraitis
  3. Thought about updating the wiki, will do so with relevant Redcap information and what Zach and I had come up with a month ago.
  4. Started a lab manager manual to make myself "replaceable". Will start filling it out throughout August.
  5. Found out I passed my summer class, so officially in my grad program! Wo0o0o.

  3. Edited the Experiments section of my Cog Sci paper to be more detailed, and added more studies for the Frontiers submission.

Zach

Linda

  1. Worked on creating S-SH word continua in Tandem Straight.
  2. Worked on final assignments for LSA.
  3. Heard back from Matt Huenerfauth regarding the details of his custom version of EMBR. Need to look at his attached files to so how compatible his system would be with the joint angles we have.
