Effect of Deafening on Adult Song Structure

This experiment tested whether adult songbirds rely upon auditory feedback to maintain a stable song pattern. For each bird, songs were recorded 7 days before deafening, on the morning of deafening, and then at several times (7, 14, 21, 28, 35 days) after deafening. Recordings from the morning of deafening were used as a template against which songs recorded at other times were compared. Data below (similarity scores) reflect how much of the song structure produced on the morning of deafening was accurately reproduced in songs recorded at other times.
